Meet Lori Barzvi, the creator of the #1 Best Seller on Amazon, My Solemate – the world’s first all in one pumice stone and soap combination. While her business is thriving now, Lori wasn’t always a success. In fact, her past business ventures as a restaurant owner and a dance studio owner both failed and left her having to start over again. Lori’s entrepreneurial drive wasn’t something that came naturally, rather it was a result of necessity and wanting to overcome personal loss and tragedy.
“The true story is, that this drive [to succeed] came as a result of losing my brother in the World Trade Center attacks on 9/11/2001. Just the night before 9/11, he expressed to me that he wasn’t happy. He was working 80 hours a week for a big company and had no work/life balance. He began to think if he were going to work that hard, then it should be for himself and he started to think about doing something more entrepreneurial. The next day he was gone. And, his intention became mine. His loss created my drive to keep trying new businesses even after many failures.”
The loss of her beloved brother, Guy, would set the trajectory for Lori’s future career and her success is a true testament to the lesson her brother’s passing taught her; it is important to love what you do for a living and never settle for less.
We are super pumped to have Lori a part of our Retail Global Las Vegas 2018 conference. So, to give you guys a little glimpse into Miss Lori, we asked for a quick convo to discuss her Amazon selling experience and her life in the eCommerce world.
Retail Global: How did you first come up with idea of My Solemate?
Barzvi: It was purely by accident. I used to be a dancer and my feet always needed extra attention because of this. One day, I was in the shower using my pumice stone and I just took the nub of soap I had and literally squashed it onto the pumice stone – thus, creating a two in one product. It was so convenient that I knew I needed to make it.
Retail Global: What was the best thing you learned and took with you to My Solemate from working in business prior to this?
Barzvi: I learned that you really have to love the process in order to succeed. In my past ventures such as owning a dance studio and a restaurant, I just didn’t love the process. So I failed in both of those businesses. But, I love creating products and so with that I found success.
Retail Global: Even after failed attempts you kept preserving through. Have you always been this driven or was it a skill you had learn?
Barzvi: I was very driven to be an entrepreneur and live on my own terms. This drive came as a result of losing my brother in the World Trade Center attacks on 9/11/2001. Just the night before 9/11 he expressed to me that he wasn’t happy. He was working 80 hours a week for a big company and had no work/life balance. He began to think if he were going to work that hard then it should be for himself and he was starting to think about doing something more entrepreneurial. That is what created my drive to keep trying new businesses even after many failures. With My Solemate specifically, I just knew I had something special in spite of the first several years of failures. So I just kept trying until something stuck. And thank goodness I did!
Retail Global: How did you first start out on Amazon?
Barzvi: Very unglamorous-ly. LOL. I started out doing retail arbitrage. I would go to TJ Maxx and Marshalls and scan everything until I found a few things I could sell. Living in New York City – this was no easy feat. I would buy a bundle of things and then hail a taxi and carry everything up to my apartment and repackage it. Then I’d have to carry the heavy boxes and walk it several blocks over to the post office. It wasn’t sustainable for me.
Retail Global: What tools/resources did you use to sell on Amazon?
Barzvi: I started by taking a course back in 2014 that was very basic. But it wasn’t until I took the Amazing Freedom course taught by Liran Hirschkorn, Andy Slamans and Nathan Slamans that my business really catapulted to the next level. I owe a lot of my success to them and their wisdom.
Retail Global: How do make sure that you are not overwhelmed with the business and still have your own life outside of it?
Barzvi: Funny you should ask. All I have is TIME! My business has become so automated and my income is mostly passive at this point. That was the dream from the beginning. To have the time to do whatever I wanted. I have proudly achieved that dream.
Retail Global: We know you didn’t start working only 6 hours a week – what was the switch that flipped and got you there?
Barzvi: Ha, no of course not. I spent many hours, weeks and months learning how to leverage the Amazon platform to sell not just My Solemate but my entire line of products. When you learn how to pick the right products it’s not hard to scale quickly on Amazon.
Retail Global: What do you find most important when attending conferences / what do you look forward to the most?
Barzvi: What I look forward to the most is the networking opportunity. Meeting other sellers, forming new relationships and learning from them about their businesses is such a thrill. I can “talk shop” all day long.
Retail Global: What advice would you give others who are just starting out in the eCommerce game?
Barzvi: My advice would be if they are going to take a course (which I do recommend) they really do their homework on which course to choose from. There are so many companies and courses these days it can be overwhelming for people that are new to the space. I would also let them know that eCommerce is a long play and it is not for those who are looking to “get rich quick”. Building a business online takes grit, consistency, and perseverance. The competition today is fierce but if you are innovative and think outside the box it’s the greatest space to be in.
Retail Global: Any future plans?
Barzvi: Yes! Without saying too much…Retail is coming (wink)
